Sunset Garden Update - Mid-June to July 2023

garden

With the abundance of rain, warmth, and sunshine seen in late May and early June, the Sunset (formerly WIC) Garden has been off to a rousing start.

Harvest Report:

harvest

As of the June 13 workday session, the garden has already seen more than 630 lbs of produce donated throughout Johnson County!

This has included 191pounds of onions, 52 pounds of lettuce, 34 pounds of cauliflower, 64 pounds of cabbage, 37 pounds of carrots, and 148 pounds of broccoli.

Sweet Potatoes:

As the last of the cool season crops have been working their way out of the garden, new installments of sweet potato plants have taken their place. Slips of two different varieties, Covington and Beauregard, went into the garden in June. Harvests of these are expected to begin in September and last throughout the fall.

Garden Notes:

  • Still being picked, broccoli sideshoots, onions, carrots, radish, and beats are continuing to add to the weekly total of donated produce.
  • Dinosaur Kale has also been a surprisingly long-lasting and efficient producer for the season, with more than 40 pounds having currently come from the garden.
  • Peppers, tomatoes, blackberries, raspberries, cucumbers, garlic, and more onions are all expected to be large producers in the garden as it transitions into its warm season crops.
