Wassmer Park Garden

Wassmer Park, named after the formerFall_garden mayor of Prairie Village, is in the heart of northeast Johnson County. Sitting on the southwest corner of 67th and Roe, it is one of the newest EMG demonstration gardens with the initial planting made in the fall of 2019. Planting resumed in May 2020 with the addition of nearly 300 shrubs and perennials. Wassmer is the City of Prairie Villages’ latest park.

This garden is a partnership with the City of Prairie Village. Wassmer Park Garden is best described as a pocket garden. The hardscape is a formal four-quadrant design, with the focal point being a large concrete urn in the center circle. Each of the four sections is roughly 20’ X 20’.

The garden will include over 400 different species and cultivars of perennials, shrubs and annuals for the garden. All plants will be labeled. Visitors will enjoy the variety of plants and want to include them in their home landscape. The goal of the design will show plant combinations to easily replicate at home.

Each quadrant will be planted with a mix of small shrubs, perennials and annuals. While the design is formal, each bed has a more informal, cottage-garden effect. Park visitors are invited to stroll the garden and find respite on one of the benches. The center will be planted for seasonal color with a mix of colorful annuals and spring-flowering bulbs.
