Backyard Garden: Vegetable Garden F

alfalfa

The focus in Vegetable Garden (F) is to have as much produce as possible. In addition, this bed is conducting several experiments with different fertilizers and support systems. The vegetable and flower selections in this garden are representative of what would be planted in a backyard garden in Eastern Kansas.

zinniasPoints of Interest:

  • The garden is planted in a mirror fashion. The garden has been divided in half with each half using the same plants but different fertilizers. The fertilizers being tested include alfalfa pellets, chicken manure pellets, “Elm Dirt plant juice” and “Elm Dirt bloom juice”. Since the Elm Juice fertilizer was a late addition, only a 40 sq ft section was designated for this fertilizer’s use.
  • Two different cucumber supports (cucumber tower, angled cattle panel) and two different methods of staking tomatoes (tomato cages and cattle panel support) are also being tested.
  • 54 sq ft of garden area is planted with flowers(zinnias and gomphrena) to bring the pollinators and to provide cut flowers for donation to food pantries. Both annual flowers were selected for their long blooming season.
  • Homemade signs using chalkboard paint help mark the different experiments conducted in the garden.

Enjoy the experiments demonstrated in this garden, understanding some failures may be seen. We hope our learnings can help other gardeners yield a more productive garden.
