flower

The purpose of the Cutting Garden is to demonstrate varieties of annuals and perennials used for flower bouquets. In addition the flowers grown in the cutting garden are donated to local food pantries along with other vegetables and fruits from the Backyard Garden.

Points of Interest:

flowerIn 2023, the Cutting Garden received grant funding from the Johnson County Extension Education Fund for renovation and expansion. Key elements of the renovation include:

  • Adding new varieties of annuals and perennials, that have a longer vase life and extend the growing season of the cutting garden.
  • Outlining the garden beds with wooden rails.
  • Installing an obelisk together with trellises to provide vertical height, interest, and structure to the garden.

Two experiments are planned for 2023:

  • Soil-Blocking techniques to germinate flower seeds.
  • Growing cool season plants such as Ranunculus, Stock, and Snapdragons under a low-tunnel during cold & frost temperatures.

flowerTypes of flowers grown in 2023 include:

  • Spring Flowers: Bachelor Buttons,Columbine, Clematis Vine, Iris, Ranunculus, Snapdragons, Stock, and Sweet Peas.
  • Summer to Fall Flowers: Black-Eyed Susan Vines, Cockscomb, Coneflowers, Coreopsis, Dahlias, Helianthus, Larkspur, Lilies ,Morning Glory, Phlox, Rudbeckia, Scabiosa, Shasta Daisies, Sunflowers, Sweet Romance Lavender, Yarrow, and Zinnias

Lisianthus and Zinnias can last up to two weeks in a vase.

flowers“Fillers” such as Euphorbia, Orlaya White Finch, Bells of Ireland, Solomon Seal, Cress, and Feverfew add structure and another level of interest in beds and bouquets.

Many new annuals were started in the greenhouse or directly sown after the last frost to provide additional variety and color to the garden.
