Backyard Garden: All American Selections Bed

photo of yellow flowers in the all american garden

This garden demonstrates new plant varieties with superior garden performance that have been selected by All American Selections (AAS), an independent non-profit organization that tests new, never-before-sold varieties for the home gardener.

AAS tests new, unsold cultivars to inform local gardeners about the AAS winners and to give them confidence that the AAS winners will perform well in their garden! The organization awards both national and regional winners.

Points of Interest:

  • Photo of flowers in potThe AAS bed at the Backyard Garden is one of five recognized demonstration gardens (via the AAS registry) in the state of Kansas. Kansas is part of the Heartland region within the AAS designation.
  • There are over 35 varieties of flowers and edibles growing within the two garden beds. Nearly all of the AAS plants in this garden are annuals.
  • With the exception of three, plantings in this garden bed were started from seed in the nearby Kansas State Greenhouse.
  • Plantings were timed so that they would bloom in mid-June this year. However, since certain plants will mature much more quickly, there will be multiple plantings in this garden to keep it fresh!

Tips:

  • If you have limited space, consider mixing flowers and edibles in the same bed.
  • Plan your plantings before you dig; and consider light requirements, soil conditions, your planting zone limitations, and the size, color and design impression you want your garden to make.
  • For more information, check out the All American Selections website.
