Johnson County Extension Master Gardener Fact Sheets

The Johnson County EMGs have created information fact sheets on gardening issues that pertain specifically to the Kansas City and Midwest (Zone 6) region.

The USDA Hardiness map was updated in 2023 for our area to be Zone 6b. Hardiness zones are based on the average annual minimum temperature in a given area. It only considers plants' cold tolerance, not the heat and humidity. Just to be safe, be conservative when choosing plants that push the boundaries of these zones. This article explains the challenges in greater detail.
