JoCo Unite in Action: Expanding Awareness, Strengthening Impact
Last month, we shared Johnson County K-State Extension’s Strategic Vision for 2026–2027 and introduced JoCo Unite, our pilot strategic plan designed to strengthen Extension’s impact across the county. A central priority in this plan is increasing awareness and use of Extension services—ensuring that every resident knows trusted, research-based education and practical resources are available to them. While Extension has served Johnson County since 1917, we recognize that many individuals and families may not yet be familiar with the full scope of programs offered across our five critical issue areas: Global Food Systems, Health, Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders, Community Vitality, and Water & Natural Resources.
Expanding awareness is more than marketing; it is about connection. Through enhanced digital communication, refreshed print materials, community presentations, public events, and stronger partnerships with local organizations, we are making Extension easier to find and easier to engage with. By sharing success stories, highlighting local impact, and meeting residents where they are—both online and in neighborhoods across the county—we aim to ensure Extension is recognized as a go-to resource for reliable information and practical solutions.
As awareness grows, so does opportunity. Increased participation in programs such as nutrition education, financial literacy workshops, horticulture support, youth leadership development, and environmental stewardship initiatives allows us to amplify impact throughout Johnson County. Greater visibility also strengthens partnerships, prevents service duplication, and positions Extension as a connector—bringing people, knowledge, and resources together to address community priorities.
A key part of turning awareness into engagement is investing in people. Volunteer development and staff training remain central to increasing our capacity to serve a growing and diverse population. By equipping volunteers with updated research, leadership skills, and innovative tools, Extension expands its reach while maintaining the high-quality, research-based education our community expects.
JoCo Unite reinforces what has guided Extension for more than a century: listening first, responding thoughtfully, and building solutions together. By increasing awareness and encouraging greater use of Extension services, we are strengthening our ability to improve the quality of life for all residents. Together with volunteers, partners, and community members, we are ensuring Johnson County remains a thriving place to live, learn, and lead.
