Strategic Vision for 2026-2027-Our Focus Areas for the Next Two Years

Johnson County K-State Extension is looking to the future while staying rooted in the mission that has guided our work for more than a century. Over the past year, Extension staff—led by County Director Tara Markley—developed a pilot strategic plan called JoCo Unite. This working plan builds on the long-standing contributions of Extension volunteers and community partners and is designed to strengthen Extension’s role as an essential partner in sustaining Johnson County’s high quality of life for all residents.

Launched in winter 2024, JoCo Unite aligns with Kansas State University’s Next-Gen Strategic Plan while reflecting the unique needs and goals of Johnson County Government. As we continue our daily work across Extension’s five critical issue areas—Global Food Systems, Health, Developing Tomorrow’s Leaders, Community Vitality, and Water & Natural Resources, this plan helps guide where focused efforts will have the most significant impacts.

Increasing Awareness and Use of Extension Services

While Extension has served Johnson County since 1917, many residents are still unaware of the wide range of programs and resources available. We are expanding outreach through digital communication, print materials, public events, and community presentations to make Extension easier to find and easier to use. By strengthening visibility and partnerships, Extension will continue to be recognized as a trusted source of research-based education and practical solutions.

Building Capacity Through Staff and Volunteer Development

Extension success is rooted in the dedication and expertise of its staff and volunteers. JoCo Unite intentionally prioritizes volunteer development, investing in leadership growth, training, and collaboration to support innovation and excellence within an urban Extension environment. By recruiting, training, and supporting a diverse volunteer base, Extension will increase its ability to deliver high-quality programming while reaching new audiences across the county.

Expanding Program Delivery and Accessibility

Johnson County K-State Extension remains committed to offering programs that meet community needs across our five critical issue areas. We will explore flexible delivery methods, locations, and partnerships to reduce barriers and increase access for residents of all ages and backgrounds. As Extension’s capacity grows, we aim to strengthen our role as a connector—bringing people, information, and resources together to support informed decisions and community well-being.

Strengthening Community and Strategic Partnerships

Strong partnerships are essential to delivering effective Extension programming. We will continue building relationships with local organizations, cities, schools, and public service providers to share expertise and resources. These collaborations help Extension reach more people, avoid duplication of efforts, and respond thoughtfully to local priorities.

Securing and Diversifying Funding

Sustaining and expanding Extension’s work requires stable and diverse funding sources. We will pursue a combination of public and private funding opportunities, including grants, donations, and earned income, to support innovative and inclusive programming. Diversified funding strengthens long-term sustainability and ensures Extension can adapt as community needs evolve.

Looking Ahead

Our mission has not changed. Johnson County K-State Extension remains committed to improving quality of life through research-based education, accessible resources, and strong relationships. With the continued dedication of our volunteers, staff, and partners, JoCo Unite helps ensure Extension remains responsive, relevant, and impactful for years to come as we work together to ensure Johnson County remains a great place to live, learn and work.
