Johnson County Extension Master Gardener
Fact Sheets
Garden Design
The Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners (EMGs) have created informative fact sheets on gardening issues that pertain specifically to the Kansas City and Midwest (Zone 6) region. Here, you’ll find answers to your questions about garden design.
In 2023, the US Department of Agriculture’s hardiness map was updated, which changed our area to Zone 6b. Hardiness zones are based on the average annual minimum temperature in each area. It only considers plants' cold tolerance, however, not the heat and humidity of that zone. Therefore, it’s best to be conservative when choosing plants that push the boundaries of these zones. This article explains the challenges in greater detail.
