2025 Extension Appreciation Awards
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – Theodore Roosevelt.
Each year, the Johnson County K-State Extension Council honors individuals, organizations, and businesses that go above and beyond in support of our educational programs. These Appreciation Awards recognize partners who demonstrate generosity, dedication, and hard work that strengthen our mission. Their contributions lighten the load for Extension staff and make our community outreach more impactful. Extension programs thrive because of these committed public and private partnerships—people and organizations who give their time selflessly, with no expectation of reward.
This year, the Council proudly presented two awards: the Individual of the Year and the Business of the Year.
Individual Appreciation Award recipient: Susie Mize
Susie Mize has been a cornerstone of the Johnson County K-State Extension since 2016, when she assumed
the role of Site Coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Sunset Drive Office Building. Under her leadership, the site has grown into one of the largest and most successful in the metro area.
In 2025 alone, 41 volunteers completed over 1,766 tax returns, resulting in refunds of more than $1.7 million for residents. Beyond VITA, Susie has dedicated eight years of service to the Johnson County Extension Council board, including time as treasurer. Her steady leadership, volunteerism, and passion for community service make her an invaluable partner and a true friend of Extension.
Business Appreciation Award recipient: AdventHealth Community Investment
AdventHealth Community Investment has been a valued partner since 2022, sharing Extension’s mission to strengthen community health and wellbeing. Together, we have expanded educational resources and support to families across Johnson County.
By partnering with Extension Master Food Volunteers, we have supported winter break meal kit initiatives, after-school cooking clubs, and back-to-school outreach events. AdventHealth’s commitment to community education and meaningful collaboration makes it a standout Extension partner. We are proud to recognize them as the recipients of the 2025 Business Appreciation Award.
Together, these honorees represent the heart of Extension—people and partners who show that meaningful service can transform a community. Their leadership, collaboration, and generosity uplift our programs and strengthen our ability to serve Johnson County. We extend our deepest gratitude to Susie Mize and AdventHealth Community Investment for embodying the spirit of care, commitment, and teamwork that defines the 2025 Extension Appreciation Awards.
