Johnson County 4-H: Supporting Youth Mental Wellness Through Mindful Me
Across the country, youth-serving organizations are recognizing an increasing need to prioritize mental health and well-being at an early age. Extension Professionals at the University of Nevada, Reno praised how 4-H programs are stepping into this space with intentional and “ hands-on, research-based programs, we [can] equip young people with tools to manage stress, build confidence and care for themselves and others”.
The article emphasizes a key reality: today’s youth are navigating a complex world filled with
academic expectations, social pressures, and constant connectivity through technology. Rather than attempting to eliminate stress altogether, 4-H programs focus on helping youth understand their emotions and respond to challenges in healthy, productive ways. This approach aligns closely with Positive Youth Development principles, which center on building strengths, fostering supportive environments, and empowering youth with skills that carry into adulthood.
One way National 4-H is addressing this need locally is by creating mindfulness-based programming. Mindfulness, at its core, teaches individuals to be present in the moment, recognize their feelings without judgment, and use simple strategies to regulate their responses. For youth, these skills can lead to improved focus, stronger emotional awareness, and greater confidence in handling everyday challenges.
This national effort is coming to life locally through Johnson County 4-H’s Mindful Me program, which has recently been launched in partnership with Rushton Elementary School in Mission, Kansas. This collaboration represents an exciting step forward in bringing mental wellness education directly into classrooms and meeting youth where they are.
Through Mindful Me, students are introduced to mindfulness in engaging, age-appropriate, and easy-to-practice ways. Lessons incorporate hands-on activities such as creating “mind jars” to visualize calming thoughts, practicing deep breathing techniques, and participating in guided stories that encourage reflection and emotional awareness. These experiences help students understand that emotions, whether calm, excited, or frustrated, are a natural part of life and can be managed with simple strategies.
The program is not just about individual activities, but about building a consistent framework for self-regulation. Students learn that they have the ability and tools to pause, take a breath, and reset when they feel overwhelmed. Over time, these small practices can make a significant impact on how youth approach challenges, interact with peers, and engage in learning environments.
The partnership with Rushton Elementary also highlights the power of collaboration between schools and Extension programs. By working together, educators and 4-H staff can reinforce these skills throughout the school day, creating a supportive environment where mental wellness is normalized and practiced regularly.
As Mindful Me continues to grow, Johnson County 4-H looks forward to expanding opportunities for youth to build these essential life skills. By investing in mental wellness today, we are helping create a generation of young people better prepared to navigate challenges, build positive relationships, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
