Helping Hands for the Holidays: Celebrate the Season by Lifting Up Neighbors in Need

Many households continue to face financial strain, and local charities rely on volunteers more than ever. By giving time, resources, and compassion, families can exemplify the 4-H pledge by using their “hands for larger service” to help ensure families in our region experience the warmth that the holidays should bring.

Here are a few organizations in the area that would love to work with your family to bring hope for the holidays to others:

Volunteer at the Johnson County Christmas Bureau

A long-standing tradition, the Johnson County Christmas Bureau (JCCB) brings holiday hope to more than 13,000 low-income neighbors each year. Their annual Holiday Shop allows families to “shop” for food, winter clothing, toys, books, and essentials—completely free of charge.

JCCB welcomes youth and family volunteers to help sort donations, guide shoppers, restock shelves, and assist with setup and cleanup. A single volunteer shift can make an enormous impact, and it’s a wonderful way for kids to see service in action. Sign-ups fill quickly, so families are encouraged to register early at jccb.org.

Support Local Families and Share Warmth Through Donations and Drives

Holiday drives are one of the easiest ways for families to support our neighbors. By collecting coats, gloves, blankets, toys, or hygiene items, Johnson County families can help charities like JCCB, community shelters, and neighborhood pantries meet rising seasonal needs. Hosting a small drive through your 4-H club, workplace, or neighborhood adds an extra layer of involvement and community spirit.

Volunteer With Regional Groups: Salvation Army & United Way

The Salvation Army offers a variety of family-friendly holiday volunteer opportunities, including sorting toys, packing food boxes, serving meals, and supporting seasonal distribution events. These hands-on roles help ensure families throughout Kansas City enjoy a brighter, more stable holiday.

For families with younger children or those seeking flexible commitments, the United Way of Greater Kansas City coordinates accessible volunteer experiences such as assembling hygiene kits, making blankets, or creating encouragement cards. These activities can be done at home or at organized sessions and provide simple but impactful ways for kids to contribute.

Small Acts of Kindness That Make a Big Difference

Even simple gestures like writing holiday cards, donating household goods, or making a small monetary contributions can lift burdens for families facing hardship. These easy, at-home projects make service accessible for all ages while reinforcing the spirit of the season.

Living the 4-H Pledge: Hands for Larger Service

When Johnson County families come together in service, the ripple effect across the Kansas City community is powerful. Whether you volunteer at the Johnson 4-H Pledge County Christmas Bureau, support regional charities such as the Salvation Army or United Way, or simple crafts at home, your family can embody the principles of 4-H to help make this holiday season brighter for everyone.
