A New 4-H Year

New Year, New Agent

Happy October! My Name is Taylor Meyer, and I am excited to begin my journey as the 4-H YouthTaylor Meyer headshot Development Agent for Johnson County. It is a joy to help support and grow this incredible youth organization to serve the families and community of Johnson County. I discovered 4-H later in life, and through my experiences, I have developed a deep appreciation for the many ways 4-H enriches the lives of young people, families, and community members of all ages.

While serving as a 4-H program assistant in another county, I had the opportunity to watch consultative judging at the county fair. I remember the judge lifting the 4-Her's crocheted bag high into the air to examine the complex work completed around the bottom of the project. Together, the judge and 4-Her discussed the intricacies of the bag and the process of completing it. You could see the care and dedication of the judge, as well as the pride and hard work of the 4-H member who had poured their heart and soul into their project. Moments like these are what make 4-H so special, and I hope to continue fostering these meaningful experiences here in Johnson County.

October 1 marks the beginning of a new 4-H year. It is a fresh opportunity for young people across Johnson County to discover all that 4-H has to offer.

Johnson County 4-H is a strong youth development program built around learning by doing. By participating in hands-on projects, members develop practical skills and set personal goals. They also gain confidence as they share what they have learned with others.

The 4-H experience reaches far beyond individual projects. Through community clubs, members build friendships and strengthen their communication skills. They take on leadership roles and serve their communities. These experiences help young people become capable and caring leaders.

With 16 community clubs and hundreds of members, Johnson County 4-H offers many ways for youth to get involved. Members can explore science, photography, foods, livestock, horticulture, visual arts, leadership, and much more. Each project can spark a new interest or even inspire a future career.

The start of the 4-H year is a great time for returning members to try something new. It is also the perfect time for new families to discover the program. There is no need to have special skills or prior experience, only curiosity and a willingness to participate.

Behind every successful 4-H experience is a network of dedicated families and volunteers. These caring adults encourage members and share their knowledge. They also create welcoming spaces where young people can learn and belong.

As the new 4-H Youth Development Agent, I look forward to discovering the many strengths of Johnson County 4-H alongside our members and families. Together, we can continue building a program where every young person has the opportunity to learn, lead, serve, and grow.

Here’s to a new year of discovery through Johnson County 4-H!
