West Flanders Garden
We are pleased to announce the addition of West Flanders Park to the EMG family of Demonstration Gardens. West Flanders Park celebrates the Shawnee Sister City of Pittem, Belgium. In honor of this Sister City relationship, a city park at 55th and Nieman was named West Flanders Park and dedicated as a memorial to the Belgians who migrated to Shawnee in the early 1900s from the West Flanders Province of Belgium. The garden design includes Belgium influences.
Construction began in the fall of 2019. Planting began in June of 2020 and will resume in the fall and the spring of 2021. The garden is planned in three phases. Phase One was started in 2020. The next two phases will be added as resources become available. Once completed, it will feature all aspects of horticulture. Perennials, natives, shrubs, vegetables, fruit, herbs and plantings will be added to engage the young and young at heart.
Extension is pleased to have this working relationship with the City of Shawnee. The garden is open to visitors during park hours. Feel free to take a stroll. EMG Volunteers maintain the gardens on Thursday morning during the growing season. Please contact the Johnson County Extension Master Gardener Gardening Hotline with questions at garden.help@jocogov.org or 913-715-7000.
