West Flanders Garden

West_Flanders_garden_designWe are pleased to announce the addition of West Flanders Park to the EMG family of Demonstration Gardens. West Flanders Park celebrates the Shawnee Sister City of Pittem, Belgium. In honor of this Sister City relationship, a city park at 55th and Nieman was named West Flanders Park and dedicated as a memorial to the Belgians who migrated to Shawnee in the early 1900s from the West Flanders Province of Belgium. The garden design includes Belgium influences.

Construction began in the fall of 2019. Planting began in June of 2020 and will resume in the fall and the spring of 2021. The garden is planned in three phases. Phase One was started in 2020. The next two phases will be added as resources become available. Once completed, it will feature all aspects of horticulture. Perennials, natives, shrubs, vegetables, fruit, herbs and plantings will be added to engage the young and young at heart.
