Where's My Income Tax Refund?

Return to Home and Family Agent Articles

By now, most taxpayers who expect a refund have filed their income tax return, but may not have received their refund. If you are among that group, below is some information you might find useful for tracking the refund you expect:

  • When you file electronically, your refund is usually issued within three weeks after the return was accepted by the IRS.
  • Choosing to have your refund direct deposited into a checking account or a savings account is a faster and more secure method for receiving your refund compared to having a check mailed to you. Check your most recent bank statement, either hard copy or on line, to see if the refund has been credited to your account.
  • If you don’t find your refund in your account, the IRS provides options for checking on the status of your return:
    • Using www.IRS.gov is the fastest and easiest way.
      • Click the “Where’s My Refund?” button near the top of the right most column on their home page.
      • You will need your Social Security number, filing status and the exact whole dollar amount of your refund shown on your income tax return to check the refund status on line.
    • IRS2Go, the official mobile app of the IRS, is available for Smartphone users to check the status of their refund. A free download is available to Apple users at the Apple App Store, as well as via Google Play or Amazon.
      • The app is available in English and Spanish.
      • Other features of the app include the ability to make a payment to the IRS, find free tax preparation assistance, stay connected to the IRS via social media, and watch helpful videos like this one “When Will I Get my Refund?”.
