Farm to Table

Date: June 16

Time: 6 - 8 p.m.

Location: Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm, is 1200 E. Kansas City Road in Olathe

Fee: Free

My wife and I took our first trip to the farmers market a few weekends back. It was a lot of fun to see vendors sharing information with people about how they grew their crop, answering questions, and engaging customers. You just don’t have that opportunity at a grocery store. That’s certainly one reason why farmers markets, U-pick operations and other on-farm sales are doing well. It brings together the consumer and producer for not only a sale, but a conversation.

If you’ve never taken the opportunity to attend one of these events, I’d encourage you to do that this spring, summer or fall. Throughout the year you will have several opportunities to make that connection. And perhaps, not surprisingly, you’ll find people just like yourself, working hard in a profession to produce our food and drink. I include drink because there is certainly a growth in locally produced wines, beers, and spirits. In fact, coming up in a few weeks will be our local Farm to Table event at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe.

Connect with local farmers
Farm to Table is an event designed to help you make that connection between food consumption and local agriculture. As host for the evening, we’ll bring together samples of food and drink and answer any questions you have about agriculture. The event will take place on June 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm. The address is 1200 E. Kansas City Road in Olathe and the web site is www.mahaffie.org

Enjoy free samples
Sampling stations will include:

  • fruit and vegetables,
  • pork,
  • beef,
  • local wines, and
  • historic items from a 19th century farm including:
    • chuck wagon beans,
    • summer kitchen biscuits and butter,
    • homemade ice cream, and
    • Oregon trail coffee.

The event is free courtesy of the Mahaffie Farmstead, our Johnson County Farm Bureau, and participating vendors. There’s absolutely no reason not to take advantage of this opportunity.
