I’ve often heard of the Farm Progress Show but have never attended. Their web site says it’s the nation’s largest outdoor farm show event with nearly 600 exhibitors planned for this year. And while I enjoy looking at new equipment as much as the next person, it’s the added opportunity to see field demonstrations, cattle handling demonstrations and ride ‘n drive opportunities that make the show an excellent learning opportunity. This year’s show will be held in Boone Iowa.

With the help of County Ag Agents from Douglas, Leavenworth, and Miami Counties, we’re planning a trip to the Farm Progress Show August 29, 30, and 31. In addition to a day at the Farm Progress Show, we plan to stop and talk with some local crop and livestock producers to learn more about their operations. Additional sites we’re trying to line up include Couser Cattle Company, and Summit Farms. Both are doing some unique things to stay profitable and grow their operations.

As we put costs together, this 3 day 2 night trip would run about $350. With the support of a $5,000 grant from USDA’s SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education), the cost will only run $225. That includes a comfortable tour bus, two night lodging, entry into the farm show, and three meals.

With a bargain like this, registration will likely fill up quickly. We would love to have you be part of our farm tour adventure. The registration and nonrefundable deposit of $125 is due by July 22. Final payment of $100 is due August 15.
